    Opticoreconstructive Department

In spite of the successes achieved in treating corneal diseases, there still remain considerable numbers of patients with stable dimness of the cornea. They are a considerable part of causes of blindness and poor vision.

If the conservative therapy does not result in the restoration of the cornea transparency, then the diseased cornea can be substituted by healthy donor cornea tissue. Such surgical operation of substitution is called corneal transplantation or keratoplasty.

With the participation of the physicians of the Department the unique operation of the intraocular implantation of the complex «artificial iris plus IOL» has been developed providing the restoration of vision to numerous patients previously considered as despairing.

In cases of severe traumas and burns intraocular implantation in combination with several reconstructive operations including the iridoplasty, artificial iris implantation, vitrectomy and one-step IOL implantation recover vision of the patients.

The high skills of surgeons and the use of modern technologies result in imperfect outcome in cases of complex optic-reconstructive operations.

The operation block is the pride of the Branch. Microscopes are the eyes of the micro-surgeon. They meet the most modern requirements. Tools of high quality are often designed at the Branch; laser equipment and the many year experience of surgeons are directed towards the successful care of patients.
