Department of Cataract and Glaucoma
Glaucoma is the chronic eye disease characterized by the increased intraocular pressure, lesion of the vision nerve and vision reduction down to full blindness.
The callidity of glaucoma consists in the absence of the expressed symptoms. One may not feel the moderate increase of the intraocular pressure but at the same time the lateral vision will gradually deteriorate and one will see the environment as through the keyhole.
In this case it is important to understand that the greatest effect is achieved with surgical treatment especially at initial stages of glaucoma.
There are several types of operations reducing the intraocular pressure. among them the most safe and highly effective are the unpenetrating deep sclerectomy and deep sclerectomy.
In this department such modern operations as phacoemulsification and laser extraction of cataract with the use of all spectrum of models of artificial lens (IOL) of domestic and foreign manufacture.
At present the phacoemulsification is the most widespread method of cataract ultrasonic extraction used by leading clinics in the world.
The fundamentally new method of cataract extraction with laser irradiation possesses a number of advantages: the high velocity of operation performance, the possibility of cataract extraction of any stage of maturity and density, the minimal eye trauma and the short rehabilitation period. The represented technology has no analogues in the world. Its merit consists in the unique wavelength which selectively acts upon the opaque lens and does not injure the surrounding tissues. The results of operations and references of patients are very favorable.
Opticoreconstructive Department
But there still remain considerable numbers of patients with stable dimness of the cornea in spite of the successes achieved in treating corneal diseases. They are a considerable part of causes of blindness and poor vision.
If the conservative therapy does not result in the restoration of the cornea transparency, then the diseased cornea can be substituted by healthy donor cornea tissue. Such surgical operation of substitution is called corneal transplantation or keratoplasty.
With the participation of the physicians of the Department the unique operation of the intraocular implantation of the complex «artificial iris plus IOL» has been developed providing the restoration of vision to numerous patients previously considered as despairing.
In cases of severe traumas and burns intraocular implantation in combination with several reconstructive operations including the iridoplasty, artificial iris implantation, vitrectomy and one-step IOL implantation recover vision of the patients.
The high skills of surgeons and the use of modern technologies result in imperfect outcome in cases of complex optic-reconstructive operations.
The operation block is the pride of the Branch. Microscopes are the eyes of the micro-surgeon. They meet the most modern requirements. Tools of high quality are often designed at the Branch; laser equipment and the many year experience of surgeons are directed towards the successful care of patients.
