Vision with cataract
Cataract is haziness in the eye's natural lens (transparent lens inside the eye). This disease leads to the worsening of vision. It is accompanied by the loss of clearness, blurred vision of objects. Image starts to double. Progressing cataract makes patient find stronger glasses.
Almost half of the people all over the world suffer from cataract in their late 50ties. Millions of people go through cataract removal operation every year and enjoy colours of the world again.
Causes of cataract
Cataract may develop as a consequence of trauma, deficient nutrition of eye tissues connected with age, radiation, diabetes, ocular diseases (for example glaucoma) or hereditary peculiarities of constitution, metabolic diseases.
Age Cataract happens most of all. As the result of ageing of the body, lens density increases and it becomes hazy. Such cataract can develop at the age of 50-60.
Inborn cataract is developed in childhood and is related to hereditary pathology (25-33%) or lens pathology that was developed during prenatal development of embryo.
Traumatic cataract may develop at any age. Hard strike, cut, puncture, thermic or chemical burn can cause haziness of the lens.
Diabetic cataract is developed as a complication of diabetes. It is characterized with fast development of the lens haziness in both eyes.
Symptoms of Cataract
Cataract may affect the whole lens or only some part of it. If cataract is located on the edge of the lens there might be no subjective visual changes. The closer haziness is to the centre of the lens the more serious visual problems there are.
Images become blurred especially in the bright light. There might be doubling or photophobia. One eye can possibly see better, than the other one. Pupil that usually looks black might become white or have some yellowish tint.
Diagnostics
A complex examination with high precision diagnostic equipment is offered in Fyodorov’s Clinic. The following procedures are performed: refractometry and keratometry, determination of visual acuity, measuring of internal ocular pressure, examination of visual field, and retina state. Endothelial cells are estimated if necessary. Considering the results of examination the optical power of the lens is estimated.
All examinations are done quickly and absolutely painless.
Cataract Treatment
Eye drops DO NOT help to get rid of cataract! They can only slow down its development.
The only proficient method of cataract treatment is a surgical extraction of the hazy lens and implantation of a artificial lens instead.
In Fyodorov’s Clinic all operations are performed in perfect operating rooms. Our ophthalmologic surgeons call it "operating room of a dream". Operating room is equipped with the latest ultrasound phacoemulsificators by Alcon, modern microscopes by Carl Zeiss, Swedish operating tables which make operating comfortable even patients with musculoskeletal system disorders.
Fyodorov’s Clinic offers its patients less traumatic, sutureless surgery for cataract including ultrasound and laser. Extraction of hazy lens is performed with the help of a micro incision (puncture). There is no need to put a stitch on it after operation.
Advantages of sutureless operations:
- Safety and lack of pain;
- Fast recovery;
- No restrictions for visual work;
- High visual acuity in short terms;
- Reduction of postoperative astigmatism;
- No need to remove stitches after operation.
If you lead an active way of life and appreciate your time, sutureless surgery is Your choice!
Fyodorov’s Clinic offers several methods of sutureless cataract surgery.
Ultrasound phacoemulsification is extraction of a hazy lens with the help of ultrasound. There are 9 phacoemulsificators of the last generation by leading manufacturers of medical machinery — Alcon (USA) and Bausch&Lomb (USA). Operations are performed by high qualified ophthalmic surgeons that have the greatest experience in Russia.
Laser extraction of cataract is extraction of a hazy lens with the help of laser energy. Laser extraction is done with the help of unique in the North-West "Rakot" complex for laser extraction, and is performed only at Fyodorov’s Clinic in Krasnodar. Neodymium Yag-laser is used to destroy the hazy lens with a unique wave length developed by a group of scientists under guidance of S.N. Fyodorov.
Laser extraction is effective in case of old, "thick" cataracts when it is impossible to use ultrasound.
Artificial lenses
The most convenient, reliable and effective method of eye sight recovery after cataract removal is implantation of artificial lens (intraocular lens).
Intraocular lens is very close by its properties with a natural lens. It is very reliable and can serve the whole life.
There is a wide range of artificial lenses of Russian and Foreign Manufacturers including flexible acrylic lenses AcrySof by Alcon (USA) designed to be injected through the minor incision (from 2,2 mm). Using this artificial lens model excludes astigmatism development and lowers the risk of secondary cataract development. Artificial lens of the last generation Acrysof Restor allows not only to recover vision of far objects, but also provides capability to read without glasses.
